Box Butte County is located in the heart of the Panhandle of Western
Nebraska. For basic community profile information on the county's two population
centers,
Alliance and
Hemingford, please refer to the Nebraska Fast Facts for each town, linked
below.
The two main industries in our communities are
agriculture and transportation.
Production agriculture in Box Butte County includes dry land and irrigated crops,
livestock and some value-added processes. The main crops are wheat, corn, beans,
potatoes and sugar beets. Many farmers also raise millet and sunflowers for diversity and
as feed for livestock. Beef cattle are the mainstay of the livestock producer's
portfolio. Other animals raised are hogs and sheep.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe, with a major hub in Alliance, is the largest
hauler of cleaner-burning, low-sulfur coal, most of which originates in the
Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana. Nearly ten
percent of the electricity produced in the United States is generated from coal
hauled by BNSF. The railroad is the largest employer in the area.
